Review

"Bored and Brilliant shows the fascinating side of boredom. Manoush Zomorodi investigates cutting-edge research as well as compelling (and often funny) real-life examples to demonstrate that boredom is actually a crucial tool for making our lives happier, more productive, and more creative. Great and relevant book. I actually listened to the audible version. This book is an eye-opener for today's tech consumed world. What I love about it is that it helps us learn to live a better life with tech. If you are looking for a book to discredit tech and bash it, this is not for you. It offers small, manageable tasks to incorporate into daily life that help stop and look around again. It also offers some interesting topics to further think about and research, like could tech be causing adult onset diagnosis of ADHD? While the author does stress, a few times, that there is no scientific data to back that hypothesis up, it still makes you think. After listening to the book, I purchased a hard copy for my 14 year old daughter to read. Tech isn't going away. But we can can learn to best live with it and not become complete disconnected tech heads.

Toward the end of her book, Manoush writes, "I'm a sucker for an expert opinion," and I share that trait, which is why as soon as I found out this brilliant person was writing a book, I had to have it.I didn't quite devour it, as one does with many books, in part because I wanted to do the challenges individually and give each chapter the requisite mental space to be fully digested. I'm glad that I did. While I've been listening to her podcast "Note to Self" for many years, and had intended to participate in the original Bored and Brilliant challenge week, I gave up on day two. I lacked the necessary motivation, perhaps because I wanted to know more, and more deeply, than Manoush was able to present during each day's short segment. (I've since discovered that this is because I'm a "questioner," as Gretchen Rubin describes it--you'll find her name and her own book as part of the advance praise on the back of the dust jacket.)Giving us more information is exactly what this book is about. Manoush is an excellent thinker (and researcher) precisely because she does speak with so many brilliant and insightful individuals, and she brings all of that hard work and deep thought into this book. Having the opportunity to read the psychology behind each day's challenge was eye-opening and motivating for me.This book is crucial for today's world, and I hope it becomes a seminal text when it comes to our relationship with technology. It is partially because Manoush is not a troglodyte that I respect her so much. As she quotes Greg McKeown in chapter 8, "technology makes a great servant but a poor master," and it is precisely for that reason that we must reclaim our time and recognize our devices as tools and not sentient beings clamoring for our attention.Manoush lays out the path for a better relationship not just to technology, but also to the world around us. This book is absolutely worth reading (and slowly, so you have time to absorb its contents).

This book--and the Bored And Brilliant Project as a whole--is exactly what more people need as the line between our sense of self and our technology becomes less clear. I have ADHD, and while one need not have the same disorder to find this book and project immensely valuable, if you also suffer from ADHD the approach detailed by Zomorodi will prove to be of great use. The technology that we as a society have bought into has really exacerbated even what minimal levels of ADHD many may suffer from, and through this project I have found a way to dial back my anxiety, depression, and hone my focus on my creative endeavors. Thank you, Manoush!

Once I got past the first chapter it was a home run! I really connected with pg 154 "Focus in the Age of Distraction.....eliminate all the nonessential activities". I raised my daughter without a smart phone (we had flip phones). If I had a smart phone when she was a toddler, I would not have seen the world through her eyes.

As with her radio show, the book is entertaining and right on the mark. Only problem (and I am not joking) is that the book encouraged me to stop reading and make time to just think, doodle, and frankly, accomplish more than I can when I try to fill up every inch of my free time with informative podcasts, articles, etc.

This book changed my life! I love the podcast so I wanted to support the book! This book was so well researched and really change the way I look at my relationship with my device and how it works in my life and not the other way around. Hopefully this book will help change the world.

Well written book mixing the experiment/challenge, the scientific basis, and the anecdotes of everyday folks trying to get a better handle on their digital device usage. If nothing else, the book should prod you to try the 7 day challenge and at the end reflect on how you want to use digital devices in your life.
