This is a GREAT book for determining which hikes you want to go on. If that is what you want it for, buy it. You won't be disappointed. With that said, it lacks some organization. For a third edition, I would recommend the following:- it is lacking in detail around the Hoh Rainforest. There are hikes listed, but without being able to wade across the river, it points you towards the packed tourist trail. If there are any more trails in this region, I would recommend adding them. For the wading, if there is a spot upriver or if trash bags could be tied around your legs to keep water out, I'd throw that in there as well.- the indexing system at the front of the book is useless. Instead, list the scenic and difficulty rating, and sort with the highest scenic rating / lowest difficulty rating first along with the page number. This is exactly what I did for my trip - I went through the entire book looking for the "best bang for the buck". I don't hike all the time and will be carrying camera gear, so I looked for the most scenic hikes with the lowest difficulty. You might want to have separate lists for photography type trips and pure hiking trips - they might value the most difficult / non-tourist hikes at the top of their list.- it wasn't until we went to book accommodation that we realized just how big the park is and that you can be more than 3 hours from a trail head. I'd have this information more clearly identified at the start of the book. Perhaps some suggestions on where to stay to maximize fun in the park. I would also then include a few example 1 day, 2 day, 3 day and 5 day trips based on where you are staying.- the book just ends. It doesn't have the author's favourite hikes listed at the end. He does mention the "if you can only do one hike, do this one" hike in the book, but if you aren't reading every hike, you will miss it. I'd include a list of his top 5 hikes at the end of the book with an explanation of what he loves about them. Maybe even a few pages on the towns around the park and where he would recommend staying, some local spots that have great food etc... now that I think about it there might have been some of that at the front of the book that I skipped over in my eagerness to read about the hikes. If there is, move it to the back.Overall this book goes a long way towards sorting out hiking in the Olympic Peninsula. With just a few more tweaks, it will be perfect.
I purchased this book and plan on taking it with me on a self guided hiking tour of the Olympic Peninsula. I am still in the planning phase and the book has fallen apart. I called the publisher and they said it was an anomaly and it should not have happened. However since I purchased it from Amazon they couldn't do anything about it and I'd have to deal with Amazon. My Amazon order states I had until June1st to return the book. I know that is awhile ago, but I have not abused the book nor has it had heavy use. I'd say I am not a happy camper, but haven't got camping yet. It's still a bad book (because of the binding) and deal for me. BTW the book content, layout and information is excellent. 5 Stars for the book content and author Craig Romano, 0 Star for the books physical craftsmanship.
Yes, love this book. Did some backpacking in the Olympics ... and this book was like by bible.
Great local author with great advice!
Information is accurate. This guide book navigate our local hikes with extra pleasure!
Used it a lot to pick our daily hikes. Very well organized. Useful information. And the GPS coordinates of the trail head saved us a couple of times. I don't know other trail guides for the Olympic, but we liked that the classification by features and we also liked that so many trails were not as popular, yet just as beautiful (if not more)...
This is my 16th book in the Day Hiking series (including New England). Have explored many new trails that I probably wouldn't have done if I would have bought the book taking me to trails away from the crowds.Love that I can look up a hike in the At Glance section of the book and see what hikes satisfy what I'm looking for. The hikes are all nicely grouped with elevation, milage, directions, and what passes/maps I need.I love that the 2nd Edition didn't just update trails that were in the first book, but also has other trails that were not in the first book.If you want to explore the Olympic Peninsula - This is it
nice detailed book on the hikes in the Olympic area.
