Book covers one of the most highly scoring units in the Pacific theater. From its start to finish the action and the descriptive action is covered in great detail. One interesting part is the compititon between pilots on scoring the most kills in combat. The units island hopping advance is very interesting on how such units are able to operate from primitive airstrips and meet combat missions.

Another great title from Osprey. The 49th is my new favorite FG of WWII. The markings of these aircraft are some of the most colorful of the entire war.

The Jap zero was suppose to be the best fighter in the world, but when hit burned quickly.Our P-38's were faster and more deadly when flown by our superbly trained pilots.The zero could out turn most of our fighters because of light weight, but could not to run or out dive our fighters.

This is a great book. Most of the books written about US fighter groups are about them flying the latest American fighters. In this case, this book has the untold stories of the 49th Fighter Group scoring victories with the P-40 from 1942 to 1944. It is amazing how the 7th and 8th Fighter squadrons score as many victories while flying the P-40s compare to the 9th Fighter Squadron which was the only squadron of the group that mainly flew the P-38 until the two other squadrons finally got their P-38s in late 1944.

Osprey Publishing has done a series of small books like this on Elite aviation units. The 49th Fighter Group certainly qualifies as an elite unit. Less than a month after Pearl Harbour they were sent to the South Pacific flying P-40's in the defense of Darwin, Australia. They fought up the island hopping campaign until the wars end in 1945 when they were preparing to move to Okinawa for the invasion of Japan itself. Beginning at the end of 1942 the P-40's were gradually replaced with P-38's and P-47's. The most famous Ace of the 49th was Richard Bong - 40 victories. By the end of the war, the 49th as a whole had scored 668 aerial victories.About half story and half photographs, the book is profusely illustrated with wartime photographs of the aircraft, people and the places where the 49th operated. The written story of the 49th is by William Hess, the official historian of the American Fighter Aces Association.
