As someone who is in the midst of wedding planning, this book was a really nice change. I am going for a much more low key affair than the "traditional" wedding and none of the wedding books I pick up address the things I am looking for. Except this one... It has basic information about the different parts of the wedding ceremony and what they mean and some ideas on how to incorporate them or why it's ok to ditch them. It gave me a lot of ideas about the type of ceremony I want to have and ways to include those people important to me. It is generally Protestant Christian in nature and talks about pieces of various Protestant wedding ceremonies.I was very glad to finally be able to buy a wedding book that didn't tell me I needed tons of flowers, bows on the pews, a ring bearer and other things we had opted not to have.

I am a clergy person who considers performing weddings a highlight of my service. I stumbled on this resource while looking for a something to guide my daughter and her fiance in writing their own vows. I was not able to find what I was looking for, but I thought this might fill the bill. It does that, and much more.This is the most honest, enjoyable book I have seen about preparing for a wedding, whether or not you want to have a church wedding. I wish I had found this long ago. I would recommend that any couple utilize the guidance about taking into account all the craziness that usually surrounds wedding preparation.Suggestions for ways to make a wedding meaningful abound, as does honest evaluation of some of the traditions that have become overdone to the point of meaninglessness.

So thankful I ordered this book! It was an inspiration and relief-for re-focussing wedding planning on the sacred rather than the temporal, and guiding the reader into crafting a ceremony reflective of the couples' spiritual/culteral background and their personality/character rather than making sure it was an event that met the material or social expectations of others. Wonderful suggestions for every aspect of the wedding-from rehearsal and wedding homilies and blessings to music and order of service suggestions. I am ordering additional copies for our public library, the church wedding director and my daughter! What a blessing!

As I prepared to preside over a friend's marriage, I was looking for a guide to help me create a service that was special and really took into account the couple getting married. This was a perfect resource for me. It was recommended to me and I'm happy that I took the advice. Ideal for non-traditional weddings, but equally effective for traditional weddings.

This book was recommended by our minister and it offers lots of ideas, alternatives and possibilities. We look forward to designing our special ceremony using it's suggestions.

My fiance and I are planning a non-traditional, non-religious wedding, but still want it to feel sacred and significant with carefully chosen readings and music, so I purchased this book (the first edition) at the suggestion of our officiant. I like the concept of a "sacred threshold" and certainly found some useful readings. I also appreciate the authors' attempts to re-think wedding traditions in light of mutual and equal gender roles. However, I found the overall tone of the book to be unnecessarily and surprisingly negative. Throughout the text there are mini testimonials from anonymous people, presumably about actual weddings, and the majority of them are criticisms or things people were frustrated about. The chapter on thresholds primarily talks about the baggage and neuroses people bring and reads as a therapy session for people in dysfunctional relationships rather than a conversation for healthy people embarking on a positive life transition. I don't go for sugar-coating everything and I don't deny that wedding planning (and relationships and families...) can be a complex, emotion-filled process, but I didn't appreciate the constant implication that weddings are painful, chaos-filled trials. In addition, the analysis of various wedding components provides only shallow overviews of the history/traditions/symbolism and then jumps into the authors' preferred "right" way to do it. I would have preferred a more in-depth exploration of the symbolism that didn't interject so much of the authors' personal preferences. Also, the book is most definitely rooted in Christianity, not "all religious backgrounds" as advertised on the back cover, and even then it's a pretty narrow band of formal Christian traditions.

the book arrived in 4 business days, via US Mail, in great condition. The only reason it didn't get 5 *'s is becasue there was already some highlighting in the book from the previous owner :) other than that, im totally satisfied! i've already purchased other items from Amazon.

I hardly write reviews but I felt the need to as it cast a negative shadow at a time of joy.I was very excited for my upcoming wedding and the thought of a book that would remind me to focus on the more heartfelt aspects of this important commitment sounded wonderful.I got something totally different than I had expected. This book has so many things that sounded like mocking, negative judgements of the "wrong way" to do things that it literally hurt my heart to read it.After reading half the book I had to put it down.I hope that you will enjoy your wedding planning with a warm and open heart and make a choice based on what it right for you.
