Forty years ago a concerned pastor, who had been intimidated by psychological counseling theories and therapies, boldly proclaimed that pastors, elders, and lay leaders were competent and better equipped to minister to their own people struggling with problems than professionals in the secular therapeutic realm. Dr. Jay Adams laid out his claim in the book Competent to Counsel. Dr. Adams is a counselor, writer, pastor, and the founder of the Institute for Nouthetic Studies. Competent to Counsel, written in 1970, is his most well-known book, though by no means his only work on the subject of Nouthetic counseling. His own failure at counseling one of his church attendees led him to seek to be a better and more effective counselor to those who seek him out as pastor. It didn’t take long for him to realize that modern psychoanalysis and counseling techniques as taught in the secular world did not offer much relief or assistance to the hurting either. Life altering experiences such as teaching practical theology and Westminster Theological Seminary, working with Christian psychologist O. Hobart Mower at two state mental institutions in Illinois, and his own personal in-depth study of Scripture all led Adams to the realization that “all concepts, terms and methods used in counseling need to be re-examined biblically†(xviii), which is exactly what he set out to do in his first work, Competent to Counsel. In Competent to Counsel Adams explains that practices of modern psychoanalysis are self-defeating because they are based on the assumption that man can heal himself, right his own wrongs, and change his own behaviors. However, the Bible teaches the believer than man is depraved and sinful from birth and has no means within himself to change this fact. Therefore, Adam argues, that apart from the work of the Holy Spirit counseling, convicting, and renewing a person, man has no hope of escape from his problems, hence the need for nouthetic counseling. Nouthetic counseling is biblical counseling. It sees the Bible as its main resource or guide to overcoming the source of mankind’s problems – sin. God has revealed truth to man’s nature, need, and salvation within its pages. Nouthetic counseling also relies on the fact that true, life-changing, healing, counseling must be done by the Holy Spirit, that no man can change himself or another. While a pastor or counselor guides, admonishes, teaches, or rebukes another according to the truths of the Scripture, only the Holy Spirit can affect any true lasting change. Adams also challenges the indoctrination of our culture that believes that only those properly trained in psychological disciplines are capable of counseling those with severe problems. They claim that only psychology has the answers to man’s problems. This humanistic philosophy has been proven wrong in the fact that the world and man have not gotten better since the advent of psychology, but in fact has gotten worse. Adams demonstrates through various illustrations and through Scriptural support that “the work of counseling should be carried on preeminently by minister and other Christians whose gifts, training and calling especially qualify and require them to pursue the work†(268). He lists what these gifts and training encompass as well as suggesting methods as to how they may put their calling into action within the counseling process. Realizing that this book was published before the existence of scientific data to support his claims, I believe Adams was a man of God who boldly took a step into a relatively ignored part of the pastor’s calling – the area of pastoral counseling from a biblical foundation. While definitely not a new idea, since the advent of psychoanalysis, the role of pastor as counselor had been relegated to the back burner. I applaud Adams for having the courage to sound the wake-up call to Christian ministers everywhere. This book is insightful, thought provoking and convicting. Pastors need to realize that part of their calling is to walk beside the sheep, protect them, correct them, teach them, and guide them into all truth through the application of the Bible in everyday life. It is the calling and the privilege of the pastor to shepherd the flock and not abdicate his or her role to the wolves waiting outside the gate. Jay Adams, in Competent to Counsel, has shepherded the shepherds in the area of biblical counseling and their personal responsibilities to their flock.
This text is well written and laid out in a great fashion to use for teaching, study and personal application. I cherish the wisdom with which Dr. Adams has so skillfully given us this treatise on the ability of believer's to help others by counseling from God's Word, along with the Holy Spirit's guidance and compassionate love. Each chapter clearly illustrated how we can apply scriptural principles to the hearts of those in need. Soul-care is the bottom line. Understanding God's design and purpose for all people, and how to allow God to flourish within our hearts is what this counseling is all about. There is some humor as well. This classic text, written in the 1970s, before the age of PC's and the various difficulties that have accompanied the past 45+ years of life, cause some of the illustrations to be humorous -- from another place and time. Man's problems have evolved in form but not in origin, it all goes back to the heart and what is found there. Jay Adams gives us a systematic look at sin within and how it affects the souls on men and women and how we can become free to experience God's original intent and purpose for us as His beautiful creations.A needful text in the church today to teach us how to recapture the biblical counsel people need that results in bringing people from bondage into true and lasting freedom. Those who desire to serve God with hope and joy in the midst of a very broken world will find this refreshing and powerful.
This book is not well organized and does not give great supports for it's arguments. It is true to the subtitle "an introduction..." because the book truly only grazes the surface and does not expound well on the concepts, which I guess is great if you want to by the follow-up book... "The Chrisitian Counselor's Guide..." It is simply too long and wordy, especially in the later chapters, to contain so little information. Many of the concepts are good and could be substantive if only they were organized and substantive. It's like a rough draft and the follow-up book is the finished product.I've read many review singing praises of this book. But as a professional, a student and educator, this book just does not hold up. The follow-up book is much better organized and the concepts are better explained... whether you agree with them or not. It is a much better read and will give you a clearer, organized understanding of what the author calls "Nouthetic Counseling"
Jay's book provides a perspective written during the early days of the nouthetic counseling movement. His optimism concerning the nouthetic model is evident and reflects the viewpoint of one who feels he has found the cure of a fatal disease. In this case he views the disease as the weakness of secular counseling models on the one hand and soft/ineffective Christian counseling on the other. The last forty plus years have tested his thesis clarifying some of its strengths and defining some of its weaknesses. Nouthetic counseling in a Christian context can be helpful if it is accomplished with balance and wisdom. It cannot stand alone. Parakaletic counseling, taking on the pain and suffering of another to enable healing, must also be part of the Christian counseling formula to balance the confrontational mode of the nouthetic model. Together the two elements complement each other providing the counselee with love and support and the challenge to radically change behavior. Jay writes clearly enough for the non professional, and includes many examples of real counseling experiences in support of his thesis. As noted the weak point of that thesis is that is incomplete by itself and fails to include the parakaletic aspect.
